Richmond Bay

A Coastal Heritage and Natural Treasure

Richmond Bay, located along the northern coast of Union Island, is a unique coastal ecosystem made up of mangroves, native flora, and fauna. The beach has long been used for recreational activities such as picnics, swimming, fishing, and family gatherings.

Environmental Challenges and Conservation Needs

Over the years, Richmond Bay has faced serious environmental pressures, including sand mining, coastal erosion, and the depletion of mangroves for firewood and coal production. These impacts highlight the need for greater environmental awareness and a stronger understanding of the connection between conservation, tourism, recreation, and livelihoods on the island.

Establishment of the Recreational Park

In response to these challenges, the Richmond Bay Recreational Park was developed under the project “Biodiversity Conservation and Education on Union Island through the Establishment of the First Recreational Park in the Grenadines.” Funded by the SVG Conservation Fund.

Community Action and Future Development

Beginning in April 2020, the Union Island Tourism Committee initiated improvements including bench installation, repairs to existing structures, the creation of a volleyball court, and tree planting. These efforts sparked renewed community interest and enhanced the beach experience for residents and visitors. A comprehensive management plan will guide site development, environmental education, and conservation efforts over the next five years.
